At a ceremony held at
the Statehouse on December 17th, Vermont Governor Howard
Dean recognized the following properties for having achieved Green
Hotel in the Green Mountain State
designation this year:
Located
in West Dover, The Deerhill Inn & Restaurant offers luxurious accommodations
and fine dining. Managing a Vermont country Inn with time-honored
strategies of frugality creates a simple elegance that decreases
waste, protects the environment and contributes to a quality experience
for guests. Frugality, in this case does not mean depriving guests
of the amenities that might make their stay at the Inn more comfortable
or more memorable. Instead, it means avoiding over-packaged goods
by buying commodities in bulk, it means purchasing locally grown
produce, and it means making it easier for everyone - staff and
guests - to recycle. The restaurant recycles more than 3,000 wine
bottles a year and the corks are donated and used for crafts projects!
The
Econo Lodge, located in Mendon, makes good on its commitment to
environmental protection and resource conservation by investing
in environmentally preferable, non-toxic cleaning supplies; energy-efficient
lighting; and water conservation devices. A recycling program captures
metal, glass, plastic, and cardboard and the loop is closed by purchasing
recycled-content paper products. A voluntary towel and linen reuse
program allows guests staying multiple nights to contribute to energy
and water conservation by avoiding the need to launder what instead
will be reused and laundered later.
Located
in South Londonderry, The Londonderry Inn provide guests with a
quality experience in beautiful, soothing surroundings. The Inn
preserves an age-old ambience of tranquility in what is an 1826
homestead; offering access to more active outdoor activities like
hiking, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, cycling, kayaking,
skiing, and golf. The Inn "closes the loop" on recycling by purchasing
and using non-toxic environmentally preferable cleaners and products
containing recyclable and biodegradable fibers and resins. Wash
up with all-natural soaps and enjoy a meal made with fresh locally
grown and organic foods.
Located
in Londonderry, The Snowdon Motel contributes both to environmental
protection and the health and safety of its guests by using environmentally
friendly cleaning products. This reduces their use of toxic and
hazardous products and helps ensure clean, healthy indoor air. The
proprietors of the Snowdon make a special commitment to the protection
of Vermont waterways both on and beyond the boundaries of their
own property.
Located
in Hardwick, The Somerset House Bed & Breakfast is a place where
concern for the environment runs deep both in the business operations
and in the innkeepers' personal philosophy. As a family and as a
business, our goal is to institute practices that conserve energy
and do as little damage to our environment as possible. In partnership
with the State of Vermont, in their Green Hotels program, we have
developed a plan, based on low consumption and recycling, to achieve
those goals. With your cooperation, we observe the following business-related
practices:
- Change bed linens
after the 3rd night of a stay that exceeds 3 days.
- Replace towels as
needed.
- Recycle all guests'
plastic, glass, and cardboard containers and newspapers, and compost
any vegetable waste.
- Use cloth napkins
and avoid the use of paper products in food service.
- Use citrus-based cleansers,
or others recommended for environmental protection wherever available.
- Dispose of plastic
trash liners only when soiled or between guest stays.
- Avoid the use of pesticides
in gardening.
- Use rain catchers
and mulch to reduce the amount of water used in gardening.
- Use recycled paper
in our brochures, business cards and other publications.
